I attended the borrowing workshop mostly because I wanted to understand a personal loan statement that had been confusing me for months. By the end of the session I could actually read it properly. The glossary they give you is something I've gone back to more than once since.

The five-week course was well-structured. Week three on budgeting was particularly useful — I hadn't really sat down to map out my fixed commitments against my income before, and the worksheet made it straightforward. The peer circle was a bit of an unexpected bonus — hearing others ask the same things I was thinking helped.

What I appreciated most was that nobody made me feel embarrassed for not knowing things I probably should have learned earlier. The facilitator was calm, patient and genuinely focused on making sure everyone followed. I left feeling more in control, not more confused.

I did the Complete Programme and found the combination of live sessions and self-paced modules really effective. I'm not a fast learner with new concepts, so being able to revisit things at my own speed between sessions made a real difference. The three months of group support is also genuinely useful, not just a marketing thing.

The organisation checklist from the workshop has become a regular tool for me. I keep my documents in better order now than I ever did before. The facilitator also made it clear what they can and can't advise on, which I actually respected — they didn't overstate what the session was for.

I'd been putting off looking properly at my finances for a while. This course gave me a structure to work through rather than just a vague sense that I should do something. The pace was steady, never rushed. Small things like the printed workbook made a difference — it's something I actually keep on my desk.

Case Studies

Three Participant Journeys

The Challenge

A participant in her mid-thirties from Subang Jaya had been carrying a hire-purchase and two credit facilities but had never fully understood how the monthly repayments were calculated. She found every statement confusing and had been avoiding opening the envelopes.

The Learning

She attended the Understanding Borrowing Workshop and spent time with the plain-terms glossary during the session. The explanation of how a reducing balance works was the clearest she'd encountered, and she noted it helped her understand why her minimum payment wasn't reducing the balance as quickly as she'd expected.

The Outcome

She began opening statements and filing them systematically using the organisation checklist. She later enquired about the five-week course to build further. Ledgra also pointed her to AKPK for a separate credit counselling conversation.

The Challenge

A self-employed participant from Damansara had irregular income and found conventional budgeting advice — mostly built around regular salaries — difficult to apply. He'd tried several budgeting apps without finding them helpful for his situation.

The Learning

He took the five-week course. The facilitator acknowledged irregular income as a genuine complexity in Week 3 and worked through examples that suited variable monthly inflows. He found the peer circle particularly useful as one other participant was also self-employed.

The Outcome

He developed a simplified monthly review habit using the course worksheets. He reports his records are now significantly better organised and he has a clearer sense of which commitments are fixed versus variable each month.

The Challenge

A couple in their early forties from Kepong enrolled separately in the Complete Programme. Each had different levels of familiarity with financial documents and wanted to build a shared understanding of their household commitments.

The Learning

The self-paced modules allowed each of them to work through concepts at a different pace before sessions, so they arrived with a similar baseline. The printed workbook became a shared document they worked on together at home between weeks.

The Outcome

They report being able to have clearer, calmer conversations about their household finances than before. Both noted the three-month group support as genuinely useful for maintaining momentum once the formal sessions ended.
